For the most part I do not work directly from photographs, but from observation and interpretation of nature, transferring a composite drawing in reverse onto an all-shine wood block. From this point the drawing undergoes further changes since the wood itself determines much of the image. I look for interesting movement in the grain of each block and often incorporate the gesture in the design. In the end, thinking backwards is a challenge and often requires a letting go of some preconceived ideas.
